Eyeglass styles change with the times. But thanks to AMC's popular series, Mad Men, the big geeky glasses of the 1950s are back in style. Yes, when it comes to eyeglasses, it's cool to look like a nerd.
Both men and women are channeling their inner geek by sporting oversize plastic frames, almost too big for the face. It's a nostalgic nod to the 1950s, when big, thick dark plastic frames, even cat-eye styles, were popular.
"The look has been around for men for a few years, but it's become more fashionable for women," said Kristie Weiss, a spokesperson for the Vision Council, a nonprofit trade organization. "It has a 1950s feel, sort of Mad Men inspired."
Large, nerdy eyewear from Wayfarer to round styles in clear, black, brown or tortoise shell follow fall's retro fashion trends: tailored suits, pencil skirts, lace dresses and bow blouses.
